Top events in chess 2011
Well, this is my top 13 events in chess in 2011. Pls reply if there something missing or sent your options as comments. I will publish the TOP 3 Chess Events in 2011 on 1st of January.
1. Sharp decline in world champion's performance: from second in Tata Steel, third in Amber, first in Botvinnik Memorial in the first half of the year to bottom places in Bilbao, Tal Memorial and London Classic.
2. The rise of China as a chess super power after a strong second place in the World Team Championship, first place in the Women's World Team Championship and Hou Yifan's successfull defence of her world title against Koneru Humpy (India).
3. Boris Gelfand became Anand's challenger after the israeli player won the Candidates Matches in Kazan, Russia.
4. Ex-world champion Garry Kasparov failed career as a coach, first with the top rated player Magnus Carlsen and shortly after with the top american player Hikaru Nakamura.
5. Norwegian player Magnus Carlsen reaches the second ever rating level, with a 2835 performance.
6. Two important insights in the life of a genius: the premiere of the documentary "Bobby Fischer against the World" which unearthed some rare footage and old photos of the legendary ex-world champion, and the publishing of the book "Bobby Fischer’s Remarkable Rise and Fall from America’s Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness" by Frank Brady, who knew Fischer from his early youth onwards.
7. The french cheating scandal.
8. The legendary chess player Viktor Korchinoi celebrated his 80th birthday in Zurich, with a handicap clock simul against ten talented members of the Swiss juniors team.
9. Ukrainian super GM Vassily Ivanchuk and his wife were robbed at gunpoint in Brasilia, just 20 metres from their hotel, as they prepared to go to airport to fly to the second leg of the Sao Paolo/Bilbao tournament.
10. Kramnik's revival, with a convincing win in the London Classic super strong tournament.
11. European Chess Union and Garry Kasparov's "Chess in School" project presented "with great success" in the European Parliament.
12. In the middle of the manhunt for Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the President of FIDE received a call on Tuesday evening. The Libyan dictator told Ilyumzhinov he was alive and well, and 'certain to win'. Less then two months later, Gaddafi is killed.
13. Iranian GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami set a new world record of 604 boards for an individual simul.
